Let me go ahead and explain this product to all those who think of this as the new “Miracle Energy.”
The biggest argument in using 5 Hour is that it has only 4 calories. Calories=energy. This is the same concept of why we eat food which is calorie dense and provides energy. Specifically the quickest reacting calorie is carbohydrates which is why athletes are recommended to consume 60% or more a day of carbohydrates. 5 hour has 0 carbohydrates which = 0 energy. So lets talk about what IS in 5 Hour. For one you have the 8 oz coffee equivalent of caffeine. Well we all know that caffeine increases alertness. Every energy drink has this and so does coffee which happens to be a tons cheaper than 5 hour. Other ingredients include:
Niacin-Coenzyme in carbohydrate/lipid metabolism. In other words it breaks down carbohydrates to be used as energy. Interesting enough, this is found in FOOD
B6-Coenzyme in amino acid (protein) metabolism. It breaks down protein to be used as energy. Guess what? This is also found in FOOD
B12-Coenzyme in blood formation and nervous system function. And again, if you eat food then your on track to consuming enough B12.
Folic Acid-Coenzyme in amino acid metabolism. Also found in food.
The final ingredients make up your “Energy Blend” of Taurine, Malic Acid, Glucuronlactone and a few others, non of which are energy providing nutrients. In fact Taurine is found in ALL energy drinks and there is not 1 single study which provides results that Taurine is a component of energy production. This is true for the rest of the above “Herbal Ingredients” as well.
For all those who believe you are experiencing increased energy using this product. You ARE and your doing it for 3 times the cost that you could be by simply drinking an 8 oz of coffee. The only ingredient in 5 Hour that is providing “alertness” is caffeine. It is a shame that so many people out there fall for marketing schemes because of their own lack of knowledge in the field of nutrition. Hopefully this has provided some much needed information on what is actually in 5 Hour and what actually provides energy to the human body. Stop wasting your money for $3 Five Hour Energy products and go consume carbohydrates and a little added caffeine if need be and enjoy the energy providing benefits that food offers. You will even save money in the process.

This is a good product but beware; the cost plus s/h is no bargain. It is probably cheaper to buy it in a store. The only advantage here is convenience.

I figured this would be a good energy shot before my evening workout and it is. After working all day and still needing more exercise this really helps get me through. At first I was amazed at how good it tasted. It reminds me a bit of Kool-aid. Then the aftertaste hit and I thought I was going to die. Fortunately it is small so you can shoot it down and chase it with anything. I’ll keep using these as long as I can find more. The pricer here on Amazon also makes them a valuable find.

This isn’t a LOT of sugar/caffeine.
It’s a LOT of vitamins and some energy blend. It has (supposedly) 200mg of caffeine, which is about as much in a strong cup of coffee. Compare this to the average 45 mg contained in Diet Coca-Cola. I compare this product to Diet Coke because regular Coca-Cola contains enough sugar to obscure the effects of its caffeine.
With knowledge of its contents in mind, this product offers a subtle and extended increase in energy. It is clearly an increase in energy, but that doesn’t mean that you’ll experience anything similar to the energy boost from a sugar high. It’s a much more controlled boost in energy.
I recommend this product to anyone who is in generally good health. Even if you don’t take it for extra energy, it’s probably a good idea to take vitamins every once in a while rather than not taking vitamins at all.
Forclosure: The only other energy shot that I tried is the Mountain Dew one…it wasn’t worth it. I have consumed more than my fair share of energy drinks, though (rockstar, monster, etc.).
